Purpose of the GIC-HIMSS Mentoring program

The purpose of the GIC-HIMSS Mentoring program is to foster relationships among various health information technology professionals at different stages in their careers to contribute to the professional development of both the mentors and the proteges.  It is hoped that the program can provide opportunities for both mentors and protégés to:

  • enable individuals to build new skills
  • prepare for career advancement
  • build self-esteem, and enhance self-confidence
  • fulfill personal goals

 

Roles & Responsibilities

 

Role of the Mentor Role of The Protégé:
  • Build a trusting relationship
  • Establish ground rules
  • Accept the protege for who they are
  • Commit the time and energy to serve as a mentor
  • Be supportive, realistic, honest, and encouraging
  • Build confidence in your protégé
  • Maintain confidentiality and open lines of communication
  • Be respectful of the protégé’s social and cultural environment
  • Give feedback about the mentoring program to GIC-HIMSS
  • Advise the protégé on career paths and development opportunities
  • Teach networking and make introductions within the GIC-HIMSS professional society, and/or others, as necessary
  • Help define the protege’s skills and career goals
  • Motivate the protégé to initiate activities on his/her own
  • Provide the protégé with constructive information and feedback
  • Be flexible and prepared for changes due to “life events”
  • Develop a trusting relationship
  • Assess development needs and goals
  • Demonstrate an interest in your career growth
  • Identify and explore various opportunities
  • Develop a mentoring plan with your mentor including time, frequency, duration, and place
  • Be honest about facts and feelings
  • Maintain confidentiality and open lines of communication
  • Listen carefully
  • Accept the mentor for who they are
  • Be flexible and open minded
  • Be willing to give feedback about the mentoring program
  • Learn from the experience, knowledge, and wisdom of the mentor
  • Show appreciation
  • Be flexible and prepared for changes due to “life events”
